First off...
Hurray I'm back home after four months gone!

In a futile attempt to better myself I spent the last four months in Virginia getting my teeth kicked in by a wanna-be drill sergeant with a power trip. Fun? Parts were...but for the most part I just spun my wheels and wasted valuable time waiting for the class to finish. Pretty typical for a military school. I did get to work out a lot of the problems with some future stories and even some current ones. However lack of access to a scanner and photoshop waylaid any real interaction betwixt me and you.... the reader of my rants and superfluous nonsense.

As I wandered about in Virginia, I checked out some of the local comic stops, and discovered several humanoids hardcovers I didn't yet own. I am an appreciator of the European sense of narrative and "claire ligne" school of cartooning so finding these was like finding little treasures. While I understand the Manga approach and grew up as an artist under the Marvel/Image age of doodling, I find that both these styles are creatively limiting. however as I incorporated this european approach my creative process grew in leaps and bounds... I began to see things in narrative that I hadn't considered before.

It took me back to why I loved comics in the first place, the combination of story and art that wasn't limited. It was invigorating! I had been sort of treading water for so long... now my focus was back and I cant wait to to hit it hard again!

Hope you'll join me for the ride....

Another color commish! I have been hugely busy of late so I'm behind on some of the regular commission stuff. You might say" an omission of commission". plus I hate doing color... I dread doing it. But there are a few of these I still owe, sooooooo....
this one was commissioned by a fellow soldiers wife...so its a good trivia bit that the super soldier model here is an actual combat vet!

AS AN ARTIST ONE OF THE TRULY FUN THINGS TO GET ASKED IS TO CRITIQUE ANOTHER'S WORK. THIS IS THE OTHER ARTISTS WAY OF SHOWING YOU THAT THEY RESPECT YOU AND ARE LOOKING TO IMPROVE THEIR WORK BASED ON YOUR ADVICE TO THEM. THIS DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE LOOKING FOR THE HARSH CRITICISM TO DISCOURAGE THEM AWAY FROM PUBLIC DISPLAY. YOU ARE IN THE POSITION TO NOURISH THE TALENTS AND HELP HONE AND STRENGTHEN THE SKILLS OF A FELLOW CREATOR. I WOULD DISCOURAGE THE NEGATIVE CRITIQUE AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY! THERE ARE NONE OF US IN THE FIELD THAT COULDN'T USE SOME HEALTHY CRITICISM NOW AND THEN. HOWEVER ,YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TRY TO NOT BE A KIBITZER AND HOLD IN THAT ADVICE UNTIL YOU ARE SOLICITED BY THE PERSON IN QUESTION.THAT BEING SAID, THERE ARE SOME GENERAL TECHNIQUES I LIKE TO EMPLOY ON MY CRITIQUES.

1. THE CRITIQUE SHOULD NOT BE SCARY! BE FRIENDLY AND RELAXED WITH THE VICTIM! THEY ARE EXPOSING THEMSELVES UP TO YOU AND YOU CAN DO A LOT OF DAMAGE IF YOU ARENT CAREFUL. CHOOSE YOUR CRITICISM VERBIAGE CAREFULLY.

2. OPEN AND CLOSE ON THE POSITIVE! FIND POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT THE WORK AND START WITH THOSE. EITHER END WITH THE RE-ENFORCEMENT OF THOSE THINGS OR FIND SOMETHING ELSE POSITIVE TO SAY ABOUT IT.

3. INTERACT WITH THE CRITIQUEE! ASK THEM QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR CHOICES IN TECHNIQUES OR WHY THEY DID WHAT THEY DID. THEN GIVE THEM ADVICE ON IMPROVEMENT.

4. NEVER CRITIQUE TALENT OR STYLE! IF SOMEONE DRAWS MANGA THEN ITS OK FOR THEM TO DRAW MANGA. IF THEIR ART CHOPS ARE LACKING SUGGEST WAYS TO BUFF UP THOSE HAND SKILLS.

5. REFER THEM TO THE SOURCE! WHERE DID YOU LEARN THOSE SKILL? WELL, TELL THEM TOO! I HAVE A SET OF MY FAVORITE REFERENCE BOOKS NEAR MY DESK THAT I CONSULT REGULARLY AND I TRY TO RECOMMEND THEM WHEN I CAN TO ANY STRUGGLING ARTIST.

6. TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR PROCESSES AND WHY YOU DO IT THAT WAY. I USE MY LIGHT TABLE TO TRACE MY SKETCHES...ALOT! IT MAKES MY FINISHES CLEANER. I FILE MY REFERENCES AWAY IN A BINDER TOO SO I CAN REFER BACK TO THEM LATER IF I NEED TO. THIS IS THE KIND OF THING THEY WILL FIND HELPFUL.

7. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, SHOW THEM! IF YOU HAVE TRACING PAPER HANDY, USE IT AS AN OVERLAY. IF NOT REDRAW IT IN FRONT OF THEM. WHY? BECAUSE YOU ARE BOTH ARTISTS AND WE TEND TO LEARN BY SEEING IT DONE.

8. ENJOY YOURSELF! THE CRITIQUE IS NOT A BURDEN NOR SHOULD IT BE AN ANNOYANCE. ITS FLATTERY TO THE TIME AND SKILLS YOU HAVE DEDICATED TO IMPROVING YOUR CRAFT.

9. SMILE! IT SEEMS DUMB, BUT IF THEY SEE YOU ARE ENJOYING YOURSELF, THEN THEY WILL PAY MORE ATTENTION AND REAP THE REWARDS OF YOUR ADVICE.

10. ASK THEM IF THERE IS ANY PARTICULAR SKILL THEY STRUGGLE WITH! WE ALL HAVE THAT ONE THING THAT TRIPS US UP REGULARLY THAT WE WISH WE COULD IMPROVE ON. (GOD KNOWS I DO!) HELPING A FELLOW TRAVELLER ALWAYS SEEMS TO HELP ME FIND WAYS TO IMPROVE MYSELF.

THESE TEN THINGS WILL HELP YOU BE A BETTER CRITIC AND HELP CREATE A BETTER ARTIST OUT OF THE TWO OF YOU. LEAVING YOUR TABLE THE CRITIQUEE SHOULD FEEL ENCOURAGED AND MOTIVATED TO DEDICATING MORE TIME TO IMPROVEMENT. THEY SHOULD NEVER COME AWAY DISCOURAGED. ITS A BIG TABLE AND THERE'S ROOM FOR ALL OF US!

TREVOR

P.S. I ONLY DO CRITIQUES THAT ARE SOLICITED FOR! IF YOU THINK YOU WOULD LIKE ONE THEN JUST SEND ME A NOTE.
